Thanks to advances in the treatment of varicose vein conditions we are able to offer a number of treatments that utilise our state of the art equipment to great effect. By being able to offer modern, less invasive treatments we can reduce bruising and postoperative pain and ensure that the patient is well looked after and treated in the best way possible.
Here at the British Varicose Vein Centre we are able to offer a number of different laser treatments using three types of laser fibre depending on the condition. A bare tip laser fibre is particularly useful for recurrent vein problems, whereas a Never Touch fibre is administered through a micro catheter thanks to its very thin nature. The third kind of fibre we use is the radial fibre which is most successful for very large diameter veins and obese patients.

Conditions treated by EndoVenous Laser Ablation
As the treatment of varicose veins has progressed , so has the science involved and now patients can opt for laser treatment that uses a more sophisticated radial fibre that emits the laser light in an arc around the end of the fibre rather than in a thin beam. Evidence has suggested that the use of these radial fibres aids and quickens recovery – although both methods are just as successful as each other.
Radial fibre endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and the more standard non radial variety are both highly effective in the treatment of varicose veins, although we do find that patients may feel they want to choose the radial fibre option for greater piece of mind.
A duplex ultrasound is used to guide the laser treatment that damages the faulty vein wall making it impossible for the blood to flow through it. This stops the bulging and the blood is diverted to the healthy, working veins in the leg.
The ELVeS™ and EVLT™ are varicose vein treatments that are quick, minimally invasive procedures that offer an effective alternative to the old fashion surgical stripping of veins.
They are performed under local anaesthetic and are highly effective with over 99% of first-time treatments being successful. Local anaesthetic is administered and, under ultrasound guidance, a thin fibre-optic probe is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually near the knee.
At the British Varicose Vein Centre we have pioneered a new ELVeS Painless™ laser treatment of varicose veins that causes less pain and bruising when compared to the standard laser. Currently we are one of a few centres worldwide able to offer this treatment.
In all these treatments laser energy is delivered in short pulses to seal the faulty vein so that blood cannot flow through it. After treatment, the blood in the faulty veins will be diverted to the many normal veins in the leg. Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed.
